Good Reads

One of my passions is reading.  I read ALOT of motivational books.  I feel like it's food for my soul.  I love motivation, I love positivity and I love being inspired.  Here are a few books that changed my life.

Back in 2010, my parents gave me The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey for Christmas.  I finally read this book Summer 2013.  I recommend this book to everyone, not just for those severely in debt.  We can all learn how to manage our money a little better. This book is filled with hope and direct advice, that at times, you may not like, but ultimately you'll be grateful in the end.

I received this book from one of my dearest friends for my birthday, "What on Earth Am I Here For? The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren - the expanded edition.  I saw Rick Warren on Oprah of course.  (I get alot of my inspiration from her)  I was touched by the episode and after hearing that this book was the most purchased non fiction book in history (other than the Bible), I just knew I had to get it.

This book is a 40 day spiritual journey where you will discover the answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for?  By the end of the journey you are supposed to know God's purpose for your life and understand the BIG picture and how everything you go through in life connects together.  I am currently on day 31.  I really wanted to wait until I was done reading to post about this book, but I wanted to go ahead and give you some info on the book before I wrote a blog about my 40 day journey.

To make sure you go through with this journey, the book contains a page where you sign your name committing yourself for the next 40 days to discovering God's purpose to your life.  You read one chapter a day for 40 days.  After every chapter, there is a Point to Ponder, Verse to Remember, Question to Consider and an audio message.  Rick Warren urges you to read this book with a partner/friend.  Every night I read a chapter to my husband and we always discuss the chapter.  It has brought us spirtually closer together. I have been so content with this book and it has been one of the reasons why I decided to go through with this blog.  I'm slowly realizing the gift of writing is my talent and my tool in speaking God's word.

"God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God's many kinds of blessings." 1 PETER 4:10

One of the most recent books I have purchased is The Honest Life by Jessica Alba.  Jessica along with Christopher Gaviagan, created The Honest Company – providing effective, safe, eco-friendly, and affordable products such as natural diapers, organic wipes, organic bath & body care and non-toxic cleaning products.  I had never looked into her company until I read her book. In The Honest Life, Jessica talks about her journey in learning about toxic chemicals in day to day products including food and her decision to make a healthier lifestyle for her and her family.  Jessica gives great and simple tips in making anyone’s lifestyle healthier, no matter who you are.

I learned so much which I will share in a later blog post, but in the meantime if you are interested, I highly recommend this book.  You will definitely learn so much!

After I read Everyday A Friday, I started reading The Magic.  This book changed my life.  I tell that to everyone I know.  This book takes you on a 28 day journey that essentially changes your way of thinking with the one word that changes everything.

The Magic

March 24, 2013

When I first starting going back to church in 2011 it was in such an awesome way.  I always loved Joel Osteen and for our 3 year wedding anniversary, we had bought tickets to go see Foster the People in Houston.  We planned a weekend getaway and decided to venture out in Houston and take advantage of trying new things while we were there.  (This was the first time Chris and I had been to Houston.)  We had not been to church in such a long time, but I was excited to go see Joel at Lakewood.  I remember when we went inside, everyone so nice, and when we actually got inside I literally felt like crying.  The service was incredible and I purchased my second Joel Osteen book that day, "Everyday a Friday".  I stayed after service and I was able to meet Joel in person and have him sign my book.  Ever since that rainy day in September, I started my gentlewoman evolution.  That was the birth of the new me.  This book was one of the reasons for my growth.  I hold it very dear and I recommend it to any and everyone.

EVERY DAY A FRIDAY
The title comes from research that shows people are happiest on Fridays. Pastor Joel Osteen writes how we can generate this level of contentment and joy every day of the week.
Known as a man who maintains a constant positive outlook in spite of circumstances, Osteen has described this message as a core theme of his ministry. Combining his personal experiences with scriptural insights and principles for true happiness, he shows readers how every day can hold the same promise and opportunities for pure joy that they experience at five o'clock on Friday.
